Home Sweet Home

Corona Virus
The news was coming fast and ugly every day. Parks were closing everywhere and we were concerned about finding places to stay. I was very tempted to go find a spot in the desert somewhere and hang out, but...family duties called and it felt right to go home.

So sadly, we decided to head home and traveled through 5 states in 6 days.
2400 miles

These are the parks we stayed at.

All these parks were very nice and low priced. We looked for RV parks knowing that many States were closing their state parks. We lucked out that Arizona did not close.

We started from Ponchatrain Landing in New Orleans.

Shreveport KOA, LA

Wichita Falls, TX - Tornado watch, thunder and lightning at night.

Blaze in Saddles RV Park, Tucumcari NM. This place also has horse hotels. (Fenced areas for horses) several horse trailers pulled in for the night. The horses were beautiful. They were on their way home to Wisconsin after spending 7 weeks in AZ at rodeos and trail riding.

Homolovi SP, Winslow AZ.  A beautiful wide open place in the desert. I really tried to soak up the peace and space.

Newberry Mountain RV Park, outside of Barstow.

Home

I look at this map and see how close we were to my main destinations, Florida and the gulf coast. Another time...another time.

Las Cruces New Mexico

The adventure continues!

It has taken me awhile but I have a growing respect and appreciation for the desert. Picacho Peak SP in Arizona was a particularly nice campground with beautiful saguaro cactus and Big views. The drive through Arizona and into New Mexico has been pleasant with some fields of wild flowers and signs for a roadside a something called The THING. (We didn’t stop).

We are now at Leasburg Dam SP and today is a down day for me. I am spending 2 days at this park while my traveling buddy has gone into town to visit a friend. It’s great timing as my last several days have been hectic and crowded. This park is quiet with easy trails. I walked along the Rio Grande but the water was very low.

Tomorrow is a long driving day. We are stopping one night in Texas and then on to one of our main goals, Louisiana.

This park has a cute cactus garden and I have a few pics below.

Day 2 of big trip and Wham Bam, no thank you mam!

March 5, 2020

A Monster turkey has taken me down. One hour away from my destination a Big Tom launched himself at my van and smashed the windshield. My friend traveling behind me said it looked like an explosion of feathers then a very naked turkey rolled off my van and into the street. He got up though...and apparently wandered off...dazed and confused.

So here I sit at a glass repair place in Escondido. I had to have my van towed. My friend in her van stayed with me and we spent the night in a kind of dicey parking lot right next to a...TRAIN that seemed to run all night with loud horns. So very little sleep, not to mention some delivery guy knocking on my window at 5am. I did not respond as I was not blocking him.

Hopefully I will be back on the road soon.

BIG trip - The South and Back March 4 2020.

I am starting year 2 of retirement and taking my longest trip to date. Tomorrow I leave for a 2 month adventure. I am heading  east to NOLA, Florida and then up the east coast. There are 2 van meet ups along the way. My travel map shows my stops. I am excited to get on the road! First stop is in Agua Caliente, just east of San Diego, for a Travato meet up. Here we go!!!
