Super MOON in JUNE at the LOON

My favorite day of the year is first day of Summer. From here on out it is shorts, tanks, flip flops and lot's of water to play in and on.

Although Saturday was perfectly hot, today is a weird twist with rain coming in. No worries, just a speed bump on the way to 90 degree days.

I welcomed summer and the Super Moon at one of my fav alpine lakes, the Loon. This area appears to also be a fav entrance spot to the famous Rubicon trail as there were maybe a 100 jeepers parking all around the damn.

we hiked near the damn on Saturday, although this was more of a trail blaze. It was a fun adventure landing us on the point a with views of the lake all around us.

After eating an amazing potluck dinner most our group headed to the lake to welcome the Super moon. We set off around 7:30 and paddled the east shore before heading over the east side to get the best viewing spot for viewing the Super Moon rising up over the mountains. This moon was big and bright. We enjoyed the lit up night sky while paddling around the islands and seeing off the last rays of the days waning sun. A camp fire with friends ended a perfect day.

Next morning it is coffee, oatmeal and down to the shore. Early morning water is the absolute best. We paddled until we felt that warning of the wind and headed back to pack it up and head out. I vote for Summer we make weekends five days and the work week two days!

Silver Lake

Silver Lake is another of our beautiful alpine lakes. It is just south of Lake Tahoe and about 1.5 hours from my house.  We had a group of about 16 paddle this Sunday.  Some of the group had been camping the weekend and several were from the Bay area and Sonoma.

The highlight for me was the beautiful bald eagle watching from high in the tree.

The lake is not large and only took a couple of hours to paddle.  The scenery was amazing with snow caped mountains in the background, lush forest and granite rock gardens.

Known for wind whipped afternoons we seemed to beat the odds and the winds.  Another great day on the water.
